How to Cite AI in APA

Here is a great article to help you understand WHY and HOW to cite ChatGPT from the APA's APA Style website:

Citing in APA

Taken from https://apastyle.apa.org/blog/how-to-cite-chatgpt:

Because AI does not involve a person doing the communicating, APA suggests the following, using a traditional APA citation:

REFERENCE

OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (Mar 14 version) [Large language model]. htttps://chat.openai.com/chat

OR

OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (GPT-5) [Large language model]. htttps://chat.openai.com/chat

Here is the breakdown:

Author: The author of the algorithm (the name of the company). ChatGPT is part of OpenAI.

Date: The year of the version of ChatGPT you used.

Title: The name of the model: ChatGPT with the version number in parentheses. To find the version, you can always ask ChatGPT when you're using it. One example is GPT-5. This example, however, includes a Month and day--this will let your reader know exactly when you used it, so they can use that information to check the source. Ask your instructor which one to use.

[Bracketed text]: Add information so the reader can better understand what's being cited. In the example, [Large language model], lets the reader know what kind of AI was used.

Source: Include the name of the publisher here, unless it's the same as the algorithm author, there is no need to repeat it. If the publisher is not the same as the algorithm author, then include it here. If you don't need to include the publisher, move on to the url of the algorithm service.  For ChapGPT, it's https://chat.openai.com/chat. For another model or product, use the url that is where you input the information, rather than the company's website. Get your reader as close to the source as possible.

IN-TEXT CITATION

(OpenAI, 2023; see Appendix A for the full transcript)

or

(OpenAI, 2023)

Just as with any other APA source, the author is listed first, then the date. In this case, it's the author of the algorithm and the year of the ChatGPT version. Because a ChatGPT result will never be replicated, APA suggests that the transcript of the result be included in an appendix.

Always check with your professor about what they want for your citations and if they want you to include an appendix.
